The Integrity Compass: How to Find Your Way Back When Life Pulls You Off Course

We all drift.

Sometimes it’s small — you meant to write, but you scrolled. You meant to be patient, but you snapped.

You meant to work on what matters, but you got pulled into everyone else’s priorities.

Other times it’s bigger — you look up and realise you haven’t been living the way you actually want to live.

That’s drift. It’s the slow, subtle pull away from the person you’re becoming.

The good news?

You don’t need to have it all figured out to move forward.

You just need a compass.

Integrity Isn’t Perfection — It’s Alignment

Most people hear integrity and think “never mess up.”

That’s not it.

Integrity is showing up as the best version of yourself — in this moment.

Not someday, not when life is easier — now.

It’s living in alignment between what you intend, how you’re showing up, what you do, and the impact it creates.

That’s what the Integrity Compass is for: a simple way to notice where you’ve drifted so you can come back.

The Four Directions of the Integrity Compass

We’re going to walk the compass in this order:

Intent (North) → State (South) → Action (East) → Impact (West)

That order matters — it moves from future → present → behaviour → reflection.

1. North — Intent: Where You’re Going

North is your True North — purpose, principles, goals, roles, relationships, strengths and challenges.

It’s your You 2.0 direction — the person you’re becoming.

When Intent is unclear, everything feels reactive. You end up doing a lot … but not the things that actually matter.

Question to reset: What matters most right now?

2. South — State: Where You Are Right Now

South grounds you. It’s your current mode — energy, emotion, nervous system.

You can’t act with integrity if you don’t know where you’re starting from.

This is where the Awareness Check-In lives.

Question to reset: What’s my state right now — and does it match what I’m trying to do?

3. East — Action: What You’re Doing About It

East is movement — habits, behaviour, follow-through.

This is where intent becomes real.

Aligned action doesn’t mean doing everything. It means doing the next right thing.

Question to reset: What’s the next aligned action?

4. West — Impact: What Your Actions Created

West is reflection — the sunset direction.

What actually happened? How did this affect me, my work, my people?

This is where gratitude, learning, and contribution live.

Without Impact, you can’t course-correct. You just keep repeating days.

Question to reset: What did today create — and what is it teaching me?

Awareness Is the Centre

When you use the Integrity Compass, you always start in the centre.

That centre point is awareness — your ability to pause, notice, and choose.

From awareness, you can look to each direction and gather information:

  • North (Intent): What matters most right now?
  • South (State): Where am I physically, mentally, and emotionally?
  • East (Action): What’s my next right step?
  • West (Impact): What have my recent choices created or taught me?

Awareness is what lets you navigate the compass instead of being pulled by it.

It’s your inner guidance system — the part of you that can zoom out, observe without judgment, and make small, intentional corrections.

So every time you feel off, start in the centre.

Take a breath.

Activate awareness.

Then move around the compass — Intent, State, Action, Impact — until you find where the realignment needs to happen.

That’s how you use the compass to come back to integrity — again and again.

How to Use the Integrity Compass Daily

Keep it simple. Three steps:

  1. Check“Where am I off right now: intent, state, action, or impact?”
  2. RealignMake one small adjustment toward integrity.
  3. RepeatIntegrity is a direction, not a destination.

Now, here’s how that shows up in the Habits Coach App:

Step 1: Set your intent on the Compass screen

Capture purpose, principles, goals, roles, relationships, strengths, and challenges. This is where you craft your You 2.0 profile — your North.

Step 2: Use the Awareness Check-In (3x/day) to monitor your state

Morning, midday, evening — “Where am I right now?” That’s your South.

Step 3: Map your actions with habits

Link your daily habits to the direction you’ve set. This is your East — acting on what matters.

Step 4: Track your impact

Use check-ins, habit tracking, and journal entries to notice what your actions are creating. That’s your West — reflection, gratitude, learning.

Same compass, four directions, one daily loop.
