What 3,990 Days of Meditation Taught Me About Awareness
Why awareness sits at the centre of everything I'm building next.
Today marks a milestone I honestly never imagined reaching.
3,990 consecutive days of meditation.
Eleven years.
When people hear that number, they usually ask the same question.
"What's the biggest lesson you've learned?"
They're often expecting something profound.
A secret to happiness.
Inner peace.
Enlightenment.
The truth is much simpler.
After 3,990 days, the greatest lesson isn't about meditation.
It's about awareness.
Because before you can change your life…
You have to notice your life.
I Didn't Need Another Productivity System
Eleven years ago, I wasn't looking for mindfulness.
I was looking for answers.
My body was falling apart.
I had sciatica that made it painful to sit.
Asthma.
Eczema.
Digestive issues.
Anxiety that I couldn't explain.
And what I believed were heart palpitations.
I'd been experiencing them since I was nine years old.
My heart would suddenly race.
My hands would go cold.
My thoughts would spiral.
It felt like I was dying.
Doctors called them heart palpitations.
So that's what I believed.
Until one afternoon, while reading a book on social anxiety, everything changed.
Halfway through a chapter I stopped reading.
Read the paragraph again.
Then just sat there.
Those weren't heart palpitations.
They were panic attacks.
For over thirty years, I had been trying to solve the wrong problem.
That realization changed my life.
Not because the panic disappeared overnight.
Because awareness arrived.
For the first time, I could finally see what was actually happening.
Looking back now, I don't think I was broken.
I think I was drifting.
Not through one dramatic decision.
But through thousands of unconscious ones.
That's the thing about drift.
It rarely announces itself.
It quietly pulls us away from ourselves until one day we wake up wondering how we got here.
I didn't need more willpower.
I needed awareness.
Because you can't change what you don't notice.
Learning to Notice
Around that same time, I downloaded a meditation app.
Every morning I sat for ten minutes.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Notice.
Return.
Repeat.
If I'm honest, I wasn't very good at it.
My mind wandered constantly.
I thought I was failing.
But over time I realized something important.
Meditation wasn't teaching me to stop thinking.
It was teaching me to notice.
Notice the thought.
Notice the emotion.
Notice the tension in my body.
Notice the urge to react.
Then gently come back.
Notice.
Return.
Begin again.
That simple loop has become one of the most valuable skills I've ever learned.
Not because it made me calm.
Because it made me aware.
The Space
Years earlier, one quote from Stephen Covey had quietly lodged itself in my mind.
"Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response."
When I first read it, I rolled my eyes.
"What a load of crap."
Ironically, that reaction proved his point.
There was no space.
Something happened.
I reacted.
End of story.
Meditation didn't create the space.
The space was always there.
It simply taught me to notice it.
And once I noticed it …
I could choose.
Not every time.
But more often.
Sometimes that's all growth really is.
One more conscious choice than yesterday.
The Safety Brain
Over thousands of meditation sessions, I started seeing another pattern.
Most of my reactions weren't conscious choices at all.
They were predictions.
Today, I think of this as the Safety Brain.
The Safety Brain isn't trying to make us happy.
It isn't trying to help us find purpose.
It isn't trying to help us become You 2.0.
Its job is much simpler.
Keep us safe.
Avoid uncertainty.
Repeat what is familiar.
Stay with what worked yesterday.
That's incredibly useful when we're crossing a busy street.
It's less useful when we're trying to build a meaningful life.
Left on autopilot, the Safety Brain slowly builds habits around comfort instead of alignment.
It creates routines that protect us …
Even when those routines keep us stuck.
Awareness is the moment we notice that pattern.
Self-leadership is choosing a different one.
What You Measure Improves
Peter Drucker famously said:
"What gets measured gets managed."
I've always loved that quote.
But after eleven years of meditation, I think something comes before measurement.
Awareness.
Because you don't measure something you never notice.
That's why Habit Zero became the foundation of Habits Coach.
Not because tracking habits is exciting.
Because tracking creates awareness.
And awareness changes behaviour.
When we begin paying attention, patterns emerge.
We notice the morning walk we keep skipping.
The bedtime we keep delaying.
The conversations we've been avoiding.
The habits quietly shaping our identity.
Measurement isn't about collecting data.
It's about telling ourselves the truth.
Without judgment.
Without shame.
Just honest awareness.
The Compass
As I reflected on these patterns over the years, I noticed something else.
Every meaningful decision seemed to come back to four questions.
Those questions eventually became the Integrity Compass.
At the centre sits Awareness.
Because without awareness, there is nothing to navigate.
North — Intent
What matters?
Who am I trying to become?
South — State
How am I showing up?
Am I grounded?
Overwhelmed?
Recovering?
Growing?
The same person makes very different decisions depending on the state of their nervous system.
That's why I've become so passionate about state-aware habits.
Instead of forcing the same habit regardless of how I'm feeling …
I first notice my state.
Then choose the smallest aligned action from there.
East — Action
What am I actually practising today?
Not what I hope to do.
What am I doing?
West — Impact
What are these choices creating?
Are they moving me toward the life I want …
Or quietly pulling me away from it?
The Compass doesn't judge me.
It simply helps me find my bearings.
Because drift is inevitable.
Navigation is intentional.
The Next Chapter
When I first built Habits Coach, I thought I was building a better habit tracker.
Today, I see it differently.
I'm building a navigation system for self-leadership.
A way to notice drift before it becomes disconnection.
A way to reconnect with intention.
To choose actions that match our state instead of fighting against it.
To reflect on the impact those actions are having.
The habits still matter.
They always will.
But habits aren't the destination.
Alignment is.
That's the shift that's guiding everything I'm building next.
Not helping people do more.
Helping people notice sooner.
Because awareness is where every meaningful change begins.

You don't need to meditate for eleven years.
You don't need to become a different person.
You don't need to have everything figured out.
You simply need to notice.
Notice when you've drifted.
Notice what your body is trying to tell you.

Notice whether your actions are aligned with the life you're trying to create.
That's where self-leadership begins.
Not with perfection.
With awareness.
Every day I still sit down to meditate.
Not because I've mastered awareness.
Quite the opposite.
Because I still drift.
I still get distracted.
I still react.
I still need reminding.
The difference today is that I notice sooner.
And when I notice …
I can choose.
One breath.
One habit.
One aligned decision at a time.
That's the journey toward You 2.0.
And after 3,990 days …
I'm convinced it always begins in the same place.
